April 15 Tax Tasks

You know Monday, April 15, is tax day.

The big job you must complete by this deadline is finishing and filing your 2012 tax return or Form 4868, which will give you an extension until Oct. 15 to file your tax return. Remember, if you do get extra time to file the forms, you still must send in what you expect to owe, or a close approximation of that amount.

But April 15 also is an important deadline for several other tax tasks.

  • It’s the last chance to make a 2012 contribution to your IRA, either Roth or traditional retirement accounts.
  • If you have a health savings account, or HSA, you have until April 15 to contribute to that medical insurance plan.
  • Do you make estimated tax payments? Then your 1040-ES voucher and payment for 2013 is due Monday.
  • And if you didn’t file a tax return for 2009, you must send in that old 1040 by this April 15 or you’ll forfeit any refund you were due for that tax year. The Internal Revenue Service has $917 million in tax refunds for 2009 that were never claimed by taxpayers.
  • Finally, if you must file a state tax return, most states follow the federal filing timeline, meaning the due date for these taxes also is April 15.
